NTPC Approves INR 5,822 Crore BESS Project, INR 3,174 Crore Meja Stage-II Expansion
NTPC approved INR 5,821.90 crore for a 4.70 GWh battery storage project and INR 3,173.67 crore for Meja Stage-II, which will add 2,400 MW through three 800 MW units.

NTPC Ltd. has approved an investment of INR 5,821.90 crore to set up Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) with a total capacity of 4.70 GWh, as part of its push to strengthen grid-scale energy storage.
The company’s board also approved an additional equity infusion of INR 3,173.67 crore into Meja Urja Nigam Pvt. Ltd. for the proposed Meja Super Thermal Power Project Stage-II.
The Stage-II project will add 2,400 MW of thermal power capacity through three 800 MW units. MUNPL is a 50:50 joint venture between NTPC and Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Ltd.. After the latest approval, NTPC’s total equity commitment in MUNPL will rise to INR 5,000 crore.
The additional equity release will depend on UPRVUNL making a matching contribution, keeping the ownership structure unchanged at 50:50.
MUNPL currently operates the Meja Stage-I project with a capacity of 1,320 MW (2x660 MW). The company reported a turnover of INR 5,099 crore in FY25, compared with INR 4,242 crore in FY24 and INR R 3,810 crore in FY23. The acquisition and equity subscription are expected to be completed by FY30.
