NRLDC, GRID-INDIA, IIT Kharagpur Sign MoU for Low-SCR Grid Stability Research
Northern Regional Load Despatch Centre, Grid Controller of India and IIT Kharagpur have signed an MoU to develop online inertia estimation and synthetic inertia and protection assessment tools for low-SCR power systems, covering both GFM and GFL inverters.

Northern Regional Load Despatch Centre (NRLDC), Grid Controller of India (GRID-INDIA), and IIT Kharagpur have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to undertake a research and development project focused on improving power system stability under low Short-Circuit Ratio (SCR) conditions.
The recently signed MoU covers an R&D project titled ‘Online Inertia Estimation and Adaptive/Synthetic Inertia Requirement for Stability Improvement of Low-SCR Power Systems with Protection Performance Evaluation’. The MoU was signed by Sajan George, Executive Director, NRLDC, and Prof. Surjya Kanta Pal, Dean (R&D), IIT Kharagpur, in the presence of representatives from both institutions.
The collaboration seeks to address emerging grid stability challenges associated with the growing integration of renewable energy and inverter-based resources, particularly in power systems operating under low-SCR conditions.
Under the project, the partners will develop online inertia estimation and synthetic inertia assessment tools for varying SCR levels, covering both grid-forming (GFM) and grid-following (GFL) inverters. The research will also evaluate protection algorithms under low-inertia and low-SCR operating conditions.
The initiative is expected to support the development of tools and solutions for assessing inertia requirements and protection performance as India’s power system incorporates a growing share of inverter-based renewable generation, contributing to a more stable and future-ready grid.
