North Eastern Power Ministers Meet in Guwahati to Drive Hydropower and Infrastructure Development
Dwelling on the current status of hydropower projects, it was revealed that currently, 37 hydropower projects (HEPs) with a capacity of 15 GW are under construction, with plans to add another 50 GW.

With India’s goal to meet the national target of 500 GW of renewable energy by 2030, the government is working to improve connectivity and infrastructure in the North Eastern region and harness its rich hydro power potential
To this end, the Power Ministers’ Conference for the North Eastern Region (NER) States, including Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Tripura, was recently held in Guwahati.
Dwelling on the current status of hydropower projects, it was revealed that currently, 37 hydropower projects (HEPs) with a capacity of 15 GW are under construction, with plans to add another 50 GW. The goal is to add 11.9 GW of hydropower capacity in the next five years. The development of Pumped Storage Projects (PSP) was also termed as crucial for meeting energy requirements.
Besides,the conference featured extensive discussions on the power sector in the North Eastern States, with a focus on hydropower generation, power transmission, and distribution. The progress of government schemes such as the North-Eastern Region Power System Improvement Project (NERPSIP), the Comprehensive Scheme for Strengthening of Transmission & Distribution Systems in Sikkim, and the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) was also reviewed.
Other topics included power sector reforms, measures to improve the quality of life for electricity consumers, and finalizing a resource adequacy plan to meet future demand.
Union Minister Shri Manohar Lal emphasized joint efforts to achieve the goals of Viksit Bharat by 2047 and highlighted the contributions of the North Eastern States. He urged states to resolve issues related to land acquisition, forest clearances, and other project implementation hurdles and to build capacities for self-sufficient execution of transmission projects with Powergrid's support.
With this conference it is expected to achieve the ambitious national target of 500 GW of renewable energy by 2030. through the collaborative efforts between the central and state governments. Further, it is expected to resolve existing challenges and drive significant progress in the region's power sector, contributing to the broader goal of a Viksit Bharat by 2047.
