The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has recorded significant progress in renewable energy adoption, electric traction and operational safety during the current financial year, officials said.
In a major push towards green energy, the zone commissioned 9.27 MWp of rooftop solar power capacity up to December 2025. This represents a 373 per cent increase compared to the same period of the previous financial year and is the highest rooftop solar capacity added by NFR in a single year since 2011–12.
With this addition, the cumulative installed solar capacity under NFR has reached 18.4 MWp as of December 31, 2025, the railway said in a statement.
Under electric traction initiatives, Trip Inspection (TRIP) sheds were commissioned at New Jalpaiguri and Dibrugarh on August 20 and November 27 respectively, enabling electric locomotive trip inspections and improving operational reliability.
The indigenous Automatic Train Protection system, Kavach, has been installed in 81 electric locomotives out of NFR’s total fleet of 285. As part of the shift towards cleaner traction, 31 pairs of trains have been converted from diesel to end-to-end electric traction, resulting in savings of 26 diesel locomotives.
To enhance route learning and situational awareness, sectional videography during night hours has been introduced across Katihar, Alipurduar, Rangiya and Tinsukia divisions, the statement added.
