NCRTC Rolls Out ‘Solar on Track’ Pilot at Namo Bharat Depot

NCRTC has launched a first-of-its-kind ‘Solar on Track’ pilot at the Namo Bharat Depot in Duhai, installing 28 track-mounted solar panels of 550 Wp each as part of its clean-energy push.

The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) has announced that the company has deployed an innovative ‘Solar on Track’ project at the Namo Bharat Depot in Duhai, where solar panels have been installed on the tracks.

This is a first-of-its-kind initiative in any RRTS or Metro system in India, NCRTC said in a social media port.

“The pilot installation has been executed on the Pit Wheel Track at the Namo Bharat Depot in Duhai, featuring 28 solar panels of 550 Wp each, with a total plant capacity of 15.4 kWp spread over 70 metres of track length,” it said.

It further added that this initiative is expected to generate about 17,500 kWh of energy annually, resulting in an estimated reduction of 16 tonnes of CO₂ emissions every year.

NCRTC is targeting around 70 percent of its total energy demand to be met through renewables. As part of its solar roadmap, the corporation plans to install 15 MWp of in-house rooftop solar capacity across stations, depots, and other buildings, of which 5.5 MW is already in operation.

According to its 2024–25 annual report, NCRTC has commissioned 4.7 MW of rooftop solar systems across its network, helping cut costs and emissions. The report adds that its long-term strategy to source up to 60 percent of corridor power needs from a proposed 110 MW captive solar plant will further strengthen its low-carbon growth trajectory.
