MP Cabinet Approves 2,000 MW Solar Park and 1,000 MW Storage Project for Shared Supply with UP

The Madhya Pradesh Cabinet has approved a 2,000 MW solar park and 1,000 MW energy storage project to supply power alternately to Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, leveraging their complementary seasonal demand patterns for efficient energy use.

The Madhya Pradesh Cabinet, chaired by the CM Dr. Mohan Yadav, has approved the establishment of a 2,000 MW solar park along with a 1,000 MW composite energy storage project in Madhya Pradesh.

This initiative aims to supply electricity on a complementary basis to both Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, as the peak demand periods of the two states occur at different times of the year. Under this arrangement, the project will provide power to each state for six months annually, ensuring efficient utilisation of resources and enhanced energy security for both regions.

In Madhya Pradesh, the agricultural sector accounts for approximately 41 percent of the state’s total electricity consumption. Due to the climatic conditions, electricity demand for agriculture peaks between October and March, primarily for Rabi crop cultivation. To optimise efficiency, renewable energy generation projects should be aligned with the sector’s seasonal electricity needs, the Cabinet noted in a statement.

Notably, the agricultural electricity demand patterns of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh are complementary. While Uttar Pradesh experiences higher demand during the Kharif season, Madhya Pradesh sees lower consumption. Conversely, during the Rabi season—when Madhya Pradesh’s demand peaks—Uttar Pradesh's requirement declines. This complementary pattern offers an opportunity for efficient energy distribution between the two states, it said.

Earlier, the CM urged the farmers to shift to solar pumps under the Component C of PM KUSUM Scheme and informed them that assistance is being provided to farmers for installing solar pumps to operate agricultural equipment. “Registrations for booking solar pumps require only 10 percent of the pump’s cost. Registrations have begun for solar pumps up to 3 horsepower in capacity. For pumps costing up to INR 5 lakh, farmers need to pay just INR 50,000, with the government guaranteeing the remaining INR 4.5 lakh,” he said.

Yadav stated that the government aims to register around one lakh farmers under this scheme. “Priority will be given to those who had registered earlier, followed by newly registered farmers,” he said. He further asserted that through this initiative, farmers will achieve energy self-sufficiency and open new doors to prosperity. The state government remains fully committed to the welfare and progress of farmers.
