Auto components maker Samvardhana Motherson International (SMIL) has commissioned its first captive solar power project in Uttar Pradesh, a move aimed at reducing emissions from its manufacturing operations and strengthening its renewable energy portfolio.

The 15 MWp ground-mounted solar facility, located in Mahoba district and developed through Motherson New Energy (MNEL) subsidiary Onega Solar, will supply renewable electricity to multiple Motherson manufacturing plants across the state.

The company said the group captive project is expected to generate about 23.4 GWh of electricity annually and help avoid approximately 17,000 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year.

The project forms part of Motherson’s broader strategy to increase the use of renewable energy across its manufacturing footprint while improving energy security and reducing long-term exposure to conventional power costs.

“Sustainability is embedded into how we think about long-term value creation at Motherson. The commissioning of our first captive solar project in Uttar Pradesh is an important milestone in strengthening our energy resilience while reducing our environmental footprint,” Vice Chairman Laksh Vaaman Sehgal said in a statement.

The solar plant was developed in partnership with renewable energy company ib vogt, which supported the project through land acquisition, regulatory approvals, engineering design, and engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) execution.

Kunal Vohra, Chief Operating Officer of Motherson’s energy business, said access to competitively priced renewable power is becoming increasingly important for global manufacturing companies.

“This project establishes the foundation for scaling Motherson’s renewable energy portfolio while supporting operational resilience, sustainability goals and long-term energy competitiveness,” Vohra said.

Parish Gupta, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of ib vogt Solar India, added, “We are delighted to partner with Motherson on this landmark captive solar project in Uttar Pradesh. The project reflects a shared commitment towards accelerating industrial decarbonisation through reliable and commercially viable renewable energy solutions.”

The commissioning comes as Indian manufacturers increasingly turn to captive and group captive renewable energy projects to lower emissions, manage electricity costs and meet sustainability requirements from global customers.

Motherson said it is evaluating additional renewable energy opportunities across multiple Indian states as part of its long-term energy transition roadmap.
