Morocco is set to invest nearly USD 16 billion in renewable energy projects over the next five years as part of its efforts to accelerate the transition to clean energy and strengthen energy security.
Speaking at the Paris Peace Forum 2026, Morocco’s Minister of Energy Transition, Leila Benali, announced that the country plans to add around 16 GW of renewable energy capacity to the national grid through a series of solar, wind, and other clean energy projects.
According to Benali, renewable energy sources now account for more than 45 percent of Morocco’s energy mix, reflecting decades of investment in the sector.
“We can say that the renewable energy share in Morocco has now officially surpassed 45 percent,” she said, adding that the figure is expected to rise significantly over the coming years as new projects come online.
The minister also highlighted ongoing reforms aimed at expanding self-consumption and microgrid systems. The measures are designed to allow households and businesses to generate their own electricity through solar installations and feed excess power back into the national grid.
Morocco has emerged as one of the leading renewable energy markets in North Africa, with the government pursuing ambitious targets to increase clean energy generation and reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels.
