MNRE Urges States to Publish Grid Spare Transmission Capacity, Citing Rajasthan as Model
The Ministry calls on States to publish updated spare transmission capacity at substations. Rajasthan’s RVPNL leads the way, improving project planning and investor visibility, with MNRE seeking nationwide adoption of the practice.

The Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has called on all States to improve transparency in their power sectors by publishing updated information on spare transmission capacity at grid substations.
The Ministry said that making such data publicly available would enable renewable energy developers to plan projects more efficiently, reduce uncertainty around grid connectivity, and support faster investment decisions.
Highlighting a successful example, MNRE pointed to Rajasthan, where Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Prasaran Nigam Ltd (RVPNL) has already been publishing updated spare transmission capacity at State grid substations. Unlike the Central Transmission Utility (CTUIL), which provides similar information for inter-state transmission system (ISTS) substations, Rajasthan has extended this practice to the State grid level, covering major voltage levels and updating the data regularly on a public portal.
Officials from RVPNL said that the initiative allows developers to assess connectivity options early, improves project planning timelines, and enhances overall visibility of grid availability. Taking note of Rajasthan’s experience, MNRE has requested all State Transmission Utilities to adopt a similar approach, signaling an intent to standardise this transparency-driven practice nationwide.
With India pursuing ambitious renewable energy targets, the Ministry said that such initiatives are crucial for easing grid integration challenges and accelerating clean energy development.
