Santosh Kumar Sarangi, Secretary, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), has been assigned the post of Chairman and Managing Director of Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) as an additional charge.
He will hold the post till the appointment of a regular incumbent or until further orders, said a notification by the Department of Personnel and Training.
Sarangi, a 1994 batch IAS officer of Odisha cadre, was appointed the Secretary of MNRE last month. He was one among 18 senior IAS officers whom the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has appointed and reassigned to Secretary and equivalent-level positions across various ministries and departments.
Sarangi’s interim appointment follows the termination of Rameshwar Prasad Gupta as CMD of SECI. However, the notification did not cite any reason for the move.
Gupta was appointed as the CMD of SECI on June 13, 2023 as CMD for a period of two years and has been terminated about a month ahead of his tenure’s completion.
SECI, a Navratna central public sector enterprise under the MNRE and the key agency steering India’s solar and renewable energy growth, has recently faced criticism for delays in project execution and market inefficiencies.
Renewable energy now accounts for nearly half of India’s installed power capacity. While SECI plays a crucial role in expanding the country’s green energy footprint, its recent challenges have sparked concerns over transparency and operational effectiveness in the sector.
