MNRE Proposes Standardised 14-Digit Nomenclature for Solar PV Cells Under ALMM List-II

MNRE has proposed to introduce a standardised 14-digit alphanumeric nomenclature for Solar PV cell models listed under the ALMM List-II, to improve product identification, traceability and uniformity across the domestic solar manufacturing ecosystem. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has proposed to standardise nomenclature for Solar PV cell models under the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) List-II. The draft proposal is intended to establish a uniform identification system for solar cell models manufactured by different companies.
 
According to the ministry, ALMM List-II currently contains model names submitted individually by manufacturers. In the absence of a prescribed naming convention, manufacturers follow their own proprietary model naming systems, resulting in inconsistencies that make it difficult to uniformly identify the technical characteristics of Solar PV cells.
 
To address this, MNRE has proposed adopting a standardised 14-digit alphanumeric nomenclature for all Solar PV cell models listed under ALMM List-II. The ministry said that the proposed format is designed to assign a unique identification number to each enlisted model while incorporating essential technical information related to the product.
 
Under the proposed structure, the nomenclature will include information such as the origin of the wafer, ingot and polysilicon (domestic or foreign), cell technology (such as Mono PERC, TOPCon, HJT or Back Contact), wafer size (including M10, M10R, G12 and G12R), number of busbars, and a manufacturer-specific identifier covering details such as brand, revision or variant.
 
For illustration, the ministry cited the nomenclature DDFTCG12R16R01, which can be decoded to indicate that the solar cell uses a domestically manufactured wafer (D) and domestically produced ingot (D), while the polysilicon is imported/foreign (F). The code TC denotes TOPCon cell technology, G12R specifies the G12R wafer size, 16 represents a 16-busbar configuration, and R01 serves as the manufacturer-specific identifier, which may indicate the product revision, brand or variant
 
MNRE stated that the proposed standardised nomenclature is expected to serve as a unique identification number for every Solar PV cell model listed under ALMM. Besides facilitating ALMM implementation, the system is expected to improve uniform product identification and traceability across the solar PV value chain and provide a common product identifier for regulatory, commercial and other related applications.
 
The ministry further noted that the inclusion of the cell origin (domestic or foreign) in the nomenclature would help distinguish between ALMM List-I solar modules based on their Bill of Materials (BoM).
 
Stakeholders can submit their comments and suggestions by August 13, 2026.
