MNRE Orders Urgent SCADA-Based Remote Control Systems for WTGs Near IAF Airfields

MNRE directs urgent SCADA-based remote control system installation for WTGs near IAF airfields to prevent radar interference.

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has issued a formal directive instructing wind project developers to immediately install SCADA-based remote control systems at all Indian Air Force (IAF)–designated airfields.

The move comes after the IAF reported delays in deploying these systems, which are essential for managing wind turbine generators (WTGs) that can interfere with Air Defence Radar operations.

According to the notice, the Ministry of Defence (MoD), while granting No Objection Certificates (NOCs) for wind and solar projects, requires that WTGs be capable of being remotely shut down during wartime, emergencies, or sensitive operational activities.

This is to prevent Doppler signatures from wind turbines from generating false radar tracks that may mimic aircraft movement. To comply with this condition, SCADA-based remote control systems must be fully installed and operational at all relevant IAF stations.

MNRE has classified the installation of these systems as 'Top Priority'. The Ministry warned that failure to comply could lead to the revocation of MoD-issued NOCs, a step that would effectively halt project operations. The notice highlights that despite repeated reminders, several developers have not yet issued work orders for SCADA implementation.

Developers have been urged to take immediate action and submit an implementation schedule to MNRE at the earliest. The Ministry cautioned that failure to act or respond could result in cancellation of the MoD NOC for the respective wind projects.
