At a pre-event conference for Global Wind Day, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), in collaboration with the Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency Ltd. (IREDA), spotlighted Odisha’s potential as a renewable energy leader.

Held at the Welcome Hotel in Bhubaneswar, the event brought together key stakeholders to discuss the state’s promising future in green energy.

Lalit Bohra, Joint Secretary of MNRE, who was unable to attend in person, had his speech read out by Dr. B.K. Mohanty, Director (Finance) at IREDA. Bohra’s address emphasized the rapid development of renewable energy across India and highlighted the measures taken by the Government of India, including efforts within Odisha. He cited the National Institute of Wind Energy (NIWE) report, which estimates India’s onshore wind potential at an impressive 1,164 GW at 150 meters above ground level, with Odisha alone accounting for 12 GW.

In his keynote address, Pradip Kumar Das, Chairman and Managing Director of IREDA, highlighted Odisha's significant green energy potential and the promising opportunities within the state. He pointed out that Odisha is well-positioned to lead in green hydrogen projects, emphasizing the state's crucial role in advancing sustainable energy initiatives.

"As of March 31, 2024, IREDA has disbursed cumulative loans totaling INR 1,25,917 crores in renewable energy, with INR 26,913 crores disbursed to wind power projects nationwide. Specifically, INR 1,637 crores loan has been disbursed by IREDA towards renewable energy projects in Odisha," Das stated.

He also highlighted the key aspects of Odisha's Renewable Energy Policy 2022, which aims to drive investments in clean energy with a focus on renewable energy manufacturing and emerging technologies such as green hydrogen, green ammonia, and floating solar. “Harnessing renewable energy is vital for sustainable national development, and I encourage renewable energy developers to seize the expanding opportunities in Odisha and other states,” Das added.

The event served as a precursor to Global Wind Day, underlining Odisha's strategic importance in India's renewable energy landscape.
