In a bid to bolster the power infrastructure in the North-Eastern region and Sikkim, the Ministry of Power has embarked on two significant projects aimed at enhancing the intra-state transmission and distribution systems.
The Union Minister for Power and New & Renewable Energy, R.K. Singh, disclosed this information during a written reply to a question posed in the Rajya Sabha.
The first project, the North-Eastern Region Power System Improvement Project (NERPSIP), targets six states - Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura, and Nagaland. It focuses on strengthening the intra-state transmission and distribution systems, specifically those operating at 33 kV and above. The project, originally estimated at INR 6,700 crore, is currently under implementation with significant progress reported.
According to the latest status update as of December 2023, a substantial portion of the project elements has been completed across the region. Assam, Tripura, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Manipur have witnessed progress in various elements, with completion rates nearing full capacity in several areas.
The second initiative, the Comprehensive Scheme for Strengthening of Transmission and Distribution System in Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim, involves an investment of INR 9,129.32 crore. This scheme aims to fortify the transmission and distribution networks in Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim, crucial regions with unique geographical challenges. As of December 2023, progress in this project has also been notable, with completion rates steadily advancing towards the set targets.
The implementation of these projects is expected to significantly enhance the reliability and accessibility of power supply in the North-Eastern region and Sikkim. By strengthening the intra-state transmission and distribution systems, the projects aim to ensure uninterrupted power supply, especially to remote and upcoming load centers.
This endeavor aligns with the government's commitment to achieving affordable and reliable 24x7 power supply for all categories of consumers in the region.
