Ministry of Power Approves Up to 654 MW Power Export to Nepal Amid Hydropower Disruptions

The Ministry of Power has approved the export of up to 654 MW of electricity to Nepal to help meet the country’s additional power requirement following recent floods that damaged hydropower infrastructure.

Under the approval, power will be exported to the Nepal Electricity Authority for 18 hours a day, from 00:00 hours to 18:00 hours, from September 13 to December 31, 2026.

The approved export includes up to 600 MW through the Muzaffarpur-Dhalkebar 400 kV double-circuit line and up to 54 MW through the Tanakpur-Mahendranagar 132 kV single-circuit line.

The quantum of power to be exported from January 2027 will be reviewed in December 2026.

The recent floods in Nepal have caused significant damage to hydropower infrastructure, reducing domestic power generation capacity and creating an additional requirement for electricity.

The Ministry said that the approval will help Nepal meet its power requirements during the difficult period and further strengthen the longstanding energy cooperation between India and Nepal.

India has reiterated its commitment to supporting Nepal and strengthening bilateral cooperation in the energy sector.
