The Union Minister for Power and New and Renewable Energy, R.K. Singh, led a significant meeting in New Delhi, bringing together government and industry stakeholders from the iron and steel sector.

The primary focus of the discussions centered around the pilot projects initiated under the National Green Hydrogen Mission within the sector. Notable participants included officials from the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy, the Ministry of Steel, and representatives from the Iron and Steel industry.

Addressing the gathering, Minister Singh underscored the government's commitment to energy transition and its critical role in the iron and steel sector. Emphasizing the potential of Green Hydrogen in the steel-making process for sectoral decarbonization, he stated, "Our idea is to help you transition. If we use green hydrogen, then carbon content becomes low; so, we need to think of ways and means of doing that." The Minister highlighted the importance of energy transition for the sector's competitiveness, particularly in the face of trade barriers imposed by developed nations.

Minister Singh stressed the need to leverage the funds available under the National Green Hydrogen Mission to develop technology for the seamless integration of Hydrogen in the steel-making process. He noted, "Some manufacturers have already begun to experiment using green hydrogen in the steel sector. The idea of this meeting is to decide the avenues in which the funds can be channeled to accelerate this transition, through a transparent selection process which also addresses the technology gaps that need to be addressed."

Industry representatives voiced their concerns about the challenges encountered during trials, and the possibility of executing projects through a consortium was explored.

Minister Singh directed concerted efforts to identify the right technology and pathways for the decarbonization of the steel sector. He affirmed the government's commitment by stating that, if necessary, additional funds beyond the allocated INR 455 Crores under the National Green Hydrogen Mission for the steel sector could be considered.

The meeting concluded with a shared determination to propel the iron and steel sector towards a sustainable and greener future through the effective utilization of green hydrogen technology.
