Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri participated in a Roundtable with leading Japanese industry representatives in Tokyo, emphasising new opportunities to deepen India–Japan collaboration across the entire energy value chain.
The discussions focused on how the two major Indo-Pacific economies can jointly build secure, sustainable, and future-oriented energy systems. At the meeting, Puri said that India’s accelerating energy demand, rapid infrastructure expansion, and reform-led investment climate, combined with Japan’s technological strengths, create a natural foundation for long-term strategic cooperation.
He noted that during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Japan in August, both sides adopted the India–Japan Joint Vision for the Next Decade. As part of this renewed alignment, an ambitious goal of JPY 10 trillion (about USD 68 billion) in private investment from Japan to India has been set, building on the progress made toward the earlier 2022–2026 target of JPY 5 trillion.
The Minister highlighted that India is opening over USD 500 billion in investment prospects across exploration and production, LNG, city gas distribution, hydrogen, shipping and emerging fuels. He added that India’s young workforce, transparent regulatory framework, and policies allowing 100 percent FDI in several energy segments make the country a dependable destination for Japanese companies looking to scale investments.
Puri pointed out that India’s six major oil and gas public sector enterprises posted combined revenues of around USD 315 billion in FY 2024–25, representing nearly 8 per cent of the country’s GDP. He said this reflects India’s growing weight in the global energy landscape and its reliability as a long-term partner.
Japan’s expertise, he noted, is particularly relevant as India advances a USD 72-billion expansion in natural gas infrastructure and works to integrate gas with future fuels such as hydrogen. He said this convergence offers a strong platform for co-development of technologies and resilient supply chains.
Referring to the long-standing trust between the two nations, Puri cited the Maruti–Suzuki partnership as an example of transformative cooperation. He said India and Japan now stand at a similar turning point in the energy sector, with opportunities to jointly develop capabilities, strengthen skills and contribute to Indo-Pacific energy security.
He invited Japanese industry to participate actively in India’s evolving energy ecosystem and assured full support from the Government of India to deepen collaboration across the value chain.
