Meyer Burger Appoints Moritz Borgmann as MD of Upcoming Solar Cells, Modules Biz in Germany

In a significant move to adjust its organisation to fit its strategic repositioning as a manufacturer of highly efficient solar cells and modules, Meyer Burger Technology Ltd has hired a seasoned solar expert Moritz Borgmann as Managing Director for its future production facilities in Germany.

1977-born Moritz Borgmann will lead the company’s newly founded Meyer Burger (Industries) GmbH, to be setup by February 01, 2021, and the production is expected to commence from Q2 of 2021.

This new entity will manufacture highly efficient heterojunction solar cells and SmartWire solar modules.

The company said that the work of establishing it’s production facilities for solar cells and solar modules in Bitterfeld (Saxony-Anhalt) and Freiberg (Saxony) will be going as per the plan.

In his new role, Moritz Borgmann will be responsible for the sale of solar modules, in addition to marketing, product management and business development. His focus will be on establishing new sales organization and executing the company’s strategy commercially to achieve the goals of its realignment from an equipment manufacturer to a solar cell and module manufacturer.

With a doctorate in electrical engineering, he has broad experience along the photovoltaic (PV) value chain. After starting his professional career in the semiconductor industry, he worked as a management consultant for many years.

As a partner of the renowned Berlin-based cleantech consultancy Apricum, he supported well-known clients worldwide in the conceptual design of growth strategies and new business models as well as in M&A transactions with a focus on the PV industry.

In this function, he already advised Meyer Burger on the development and implementation of the new business strategy.

Initially, the company is planning to sell its high-efficiency modules in the DACH region and in Western Europe, and has already recruited the first sales staff with expertise in the premium segment for relevant European markets.
