Metro Railway has commissioned a 500 kWp rooftop solar power plant at Jessore Road Metro station on the Yellow Line, marking another step in its renewable energy expansion programme across the Kolkata Metro network.
The solar installation was inaugurated by Prem Sagar Gupta, General Manager, Metro Railway, in the presence of senior railway officials.
The rooftop solar plant is designed to generate around 1,800 units of electricity daily. The power generated will primarily meet the station's auxiliary electricity requirements, including lighting, lifts and escalators. Surplus electricity produced by the system will be fed back into the Metro network.
According to Metro Railway, the project is expected to reduce annual electricity expenditure by nearly INR 50 lakh. The capital investment for the installation is projected to be recovered within three years.
The solar power system has an estimated operational life of 25 years and is equipped with a cloud based monitoring platform for real time tracking of electricity generation and overall system performance.
The commissioning of the Jessore Road installation forms part of Metro Railway's broader renewable energy programme, under which it is expanding solar power capacity across its stations, depots and other facilities as it works towards a planned renewable energy capacity of 34.3 MW across the network.
