Masdar, Taaleri Energia Inaugurate 154 MW Cibuk 2 Wind Farm in Serbia

Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC (Masdar) and Finnish renewable energy fund manager Taaleri Energia have inaugurated the 154 MW Cibuk 2 wind farm in Serbia, creating the largest wind power hub in Serbia and the Western Balkans.

Located in Serbia’s South Banat region, around 40 km from Belgrade, Cibuk 2 operates alongside the 158 MW Cibuk 1 wind farm. Together, the two projects have a combined installed capacity of 312 MW and can generate enough clean electricity to supply around 178,800 households.

The combined Cibuk projects represent more than €500 million in foreign direct investment in Serbia’s energy infrastructure.

Cibuk 2 comprises 22 Nordex wind turbines and is expected to generate up to 336,000 MWh of clean electricity annually, enough to power around 80,000 homes. The project is also expected to avoid approximately 311,200 tonnes per year of carbon dioxide emissions.

The wind farm is jointly owned on a 50:50 basis by Masdar and Taaleri Energia and was developed in partnership with New Energy Solutions.

More than 1,000 people were engaged during construction across the workforce, subcontractors and project management, with the majority coming from the South Banat region.

The project is expected to provide domestically generated electricity as Serbia’s power demand grows, while supporting energy security and reducing exposure to fuel price volatility.

Masdar currently has a development pipeline of more than 200 MW in Serbia covering solar, wind and battery storage projects. Serbia plans to add around 3.5 GW of new wind and solar capacity by 2030 and aims to increase renewables’ share of electricity generation to 45 percent over the same period.

Serbian Minister of Mining and Energy Dubravka Ðedovic Handanovic said Cibuk 2 would contribute to the country’s decarbonisation and energy independence efforts. She noted that the combined 312 MW capacity of Cibuk 1 and Cibuk 2 accounts for around 25 percent of Serbia’s combined wind and solar power capacity.

Masdar CEO Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi said the Cibuk hub, with more than 300 MW installed, provides a platform for further expansion in Serbia and the wider Central and Eastern European region.

Taaleri Energia Managing Director Kai Rintala said the completion of Cibuk 2 reflects the company’s long-term commitment to the region and supports its plans to expand its renewable energy portfolio across Eastern Europe.

Masdar has a renewable energy portfolio exceeding 65 GW across solar, onshore wind, offshore wind, battery storage and hybrid technologies, with an ambition to reach 100 GW of energy capacity by 2030.
