Pune-based firm, Malaviya Solar Energy Consultancy has entered into an exclusive technology licensing agreement with Germany-based LuxChemtech GmbH for its patented solar panel recycling process, marking a significant step toward circular economy solutions in India’s solar sector.
The globally patented technology follows a zero-waste approach and enables recovery of over 98 per cent of metals from end-of-life photovoltaic (PV) modules. The high recovery rate is expected to substantially enhance the value of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) certificates, supporting compliance with emerging sustainability regulations.
LuxChemtech GmbH specialises in high-tech recycling technologies and equipment for recovering silicon scrap and other complex waste streams, including photovoltaic modules. The process uses water and organic chemicals to safely and efficiently separate metals and materials from discarded solar panels, ensuring an environmentally responsible recycling pathway.
The technology was developed under the EU-funded PHOTORAMA project, (PHOtovoltaic waste management–advanced Technologies for recOvery & recycling of secondary RAw MAterials). The project ran from 2021 to mid-2025 and established a pilot recycling line at LuxChemtech’s facility in Germany, demonstrating high-value material recovery from end-of-life solar panels.
India’s renewable energy ambitions include a target of 500 GW by 2030, with solar PV expected to contribute up to 350 GWp. This growth is projected to generate nearly 19 million tonnes of solar panel waste under normal operating life cycles, rising by an additional 35 per cent in cases of early module retirement. Notably, recoverable silver alone is estimated to exceed 10,000 tonnes, presenting both an environmental and economic opportunity.
Malaviya Solar Energy Consultancy plans to collaborate with glass and aluminium manufacturers, e-waste processors, and clean-tech start-ups to deploy the licensed recycling technology across India.
