MAHLE, a German-based firm specialising in advanced automotive components and sustainable mobility, secures a strategic contract with Germany's MAN Truck & Bus for hydrogen engine components.
MAHLE has achieved a significant milestone in sustainable mobility by partnering with MAN Truck & Bus to supply advanced components for the hydrogen engine of the 'MAN hTGX' truck. This truck, which recently won the prestigious 'Truck Innovation Award 2025', is equipped with a cutting-edge 6-cylinder engine featuring a 16.8L displacement and a power output of 383 kW.
MAN's hydrogen-powered engine will integrate MAHLE’s hydrogen power cell unit, comprising pistons, piston rings, piston pins, and cylinder liners, along with components for the valve train. The hydrogen engine is tailored to achieve robust, climate-neutral operation, making it a key player in the zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) category. MAN plans to manufacture 200 units of the hTGX truck starting in 2025 for selected markets, emphasising its commitment to hydrogen as a clean energy source for commercial transportation.
MAHLE's advanced components have been developed to meet the specific requirements of hydrogen combustion, ensuring minimal oil consumption and reducing hydrogen leakage into the crankcase—a critical challenge in hydrogen engines. Rigorous testing at MAHLE’s hydrogen test center in Stuttgart has demonstrated the technology’s readiness for mass production.
Dr. Roger Busch, a member of MAHLE’s Management Committee, highlighted the company's ability to leverage over 100 years of expertise in engine components to create solutions for hydrogen combustion engines, fulfilling market demands for performance, efficiency, and durability.
With nearly 30 hydrogen projects underway across the on- and off-highway sectors, MAHLE is driving innovation in sustainable combustion engines and fuel cell powertrains. This contract with MAN Truck & Bus marks a pivotal step in its mission to actively shape the transportation sector's decarbonization and underscores hydrogen’s critical role in achieving a sustainable future.
