For its "Born Electric Platform," Mahindra will use components from Volkswagen's MEB platform, such as electric motors, battery system components, and battery cells.

Volkswagen, the world's second-largest manufacturer, and India's Mahindra and Mahindra have signed an agreement to explore the viability of using the German company's components for electric vehicle manufacturing.
The MEB platform enables automakers to rapidly and cost-effectively expand their electrified vehicle line.

On Wednesday evening, the two companies agreed to investigate the viability of collaborating. According to a joint press statement, they intend to reach a contractual agreement for the supply of the aforementioned components by the end of this calendar year.

The move is surprising because Mahindra, one of India's first electric vehicle manufacturers, has been developing its own platforms for several years. Prior to their split in 2020, the corporation was also strongly affiliated with Ford in the United States.

Meanwhile, Volkswagen has been rumored to be in negotiations with Tata Motors about sharing car architecture and sourcing in order to reduce the cost of developing and manufacturing new vehicles.

“Mahindra is a pioneer in the electric mobility space in India and a great partner for our MEB Electric Platform," said Thomas Schmall, Volkswagen Group Board of Management member for Technology and CEO of Volkswagen Group Components.

"The MEB is thus progressively developing into the leading open platform for e-mobility, generating significant volume and economies of scale. That's crucial for every company in the EV world and the key to competitive solutions for our customers," he said.
