The electric vehicle population, comprising two-wheelers and buses, is developing gradually, but progressively, across Maharashtra, with registrations crossing the 20,000-mark in January 2020, believed sources in the state transport department. The state government had communicated a policy for the promotion of e-vehicles in 2017-18.
“We are yet to witness a spurt in e-vehicle registration though the governments—both at Centre and state—are promoting these environment-friendly vehicles and encouraging motorists to buy them,” said sources. He added that in Mumbai alone, there are over 2,000 e-vehicles, with maximum sale of e-scooters in the past one year.
The state government is now planning to push for e-auto rickshaws, especially in the Mumbai metropolitan region (MMR).
