Lucknow has secured the top position among districts nationwide in rooftop solar installations under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, overtaking Surat, according to official data released up to April 15, 2026.

According to Inderjeet Singh, Director of the Uttar Pradesh New and Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA), more than 87,000 rooftop solar plants have been installed in Lucknow so far under the scheme, the highest in any district in the country. He added, “By April 15, 3,133 rooftop solar plants had been installed in Lucknow alone. This achievement makes Lucknow the leading district in the country in adopting solar energy.”

Electricity consumption has increased significantly in urban areas due to the growing use of induction cooktops instead of gas and the rising demand for electric vehicles. Along with this, the desire to control rising electricity bills and increased awareness about environmental protection have encouraged people to adopt solar energy rapidly. Rooftop solar systems are providing long-term financial benefits to consumers and making them self-reliant in energy.

Both central and state government solar subsidies, along with a simplified application process, have played an important role in this growth. Additionally, with the support of DISCOMs and related agencies, the installation process has become faster and smoother.

Lucknow’s progress is setting an example for other districts. Cities across Uttar Pradesh are also witnessing rapid growth in solar installations, positioning the state as a major hub for residential rooftop solar energy in the country.
