Kuwait’s Supreme Energy Committee has reviewed progress on the country’s energy sector transformation plan for 2035, including a consultancy study outlining targets, projects and policies for the sector’s development.
The review took place at the committee’s third meeting, chaired by Dr Sabeeh Al-Mukhaizeem, Minister of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy.
Al-Mukhaizeem said that energy sector development was a national responsibility that required a clear vision and coordinated efforts among government institutions. He said that planning must address current requirements while preparing for future demand driven by population growth, urbanisation and economic expansion.
The minister called for clear implementation priorities, defined responsibilities among the agencies concerned and measurable performance indicators for each stage of the plan. These measures would help track progress, address challenges and ensure timely decisions, he said.
He added that bringing together government, scientific and technical expertise would help develop practical solutions based on research and data, improving planning and execution.
Al-Mukhaizeem said that the success of the energy transition would depend on translating plans into projects that improve electricity supply reliability, increase resource-use efficiency, diversify the energy mix and expand renewable energy in line with Kuwait’s development priorities.
He also stressed the importance of continued cooperation in building an energy system that is more efficient, flexible and sustainable, noting that decisions taken today would affect future generations.
During the meeting, the committee reviewed a report on the work of the ministry’s technical teams, covering their organisational framework, achievements, major challenges and issues requiring guidance from the committee.
The Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS) presented the findings of a consultancy study on the energy sector transformation plan. The study covered targets for 2035 and 2060, a portfolio of projects, proposed policies and studies, and a governance framework incorporating performance indicators.
The committee’s review focused on implementation requirements and coordination among the institutions involved in carrying out Kuwait’s long-term energy sector transformation plan.
