Karnataka has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with GAIL (India) Ltd. to establish 1 GW of renewable energy capacity in the state.
This INR 5,000 crore initiative aims to bolster Karnataka’s position as a green energy hub, drive job creation, and accelerate infrastructure development.
The MoU was signed by key officials, including Minister M.B. Patil for Large and Medium Industries, Minister K.J. George for Energy, and T.D. Rajegowda, Chairman of Karnataka Renewable Energy Development Ltd (KREDL). GAIL’s representative, Parivesh Chugh Singh, Executive Director (SD & Renewables), also signed on behalf of the company.
The agreement will allow GAIL to explore a diversified renewable energy portfolio, including solar (ground-mounted, rooftop, and floating), wind energy, and storage solutions. GAIL is also set to acquire land within Karnataka’s solar parks, supported by swift approvals and land allocation through the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB).
Minister M.B. Patil emphasised that GAIL will facilitate the acquisition of land from farmers on a lease basis, contributing to faster project implementation. He also mentioned that local farmers are ready to offer additional land for similar future projects.
Minister K.J. George highlighted that the partnership would further solidify Karnataka’s green energy leadership while creating significant economic and employment opportunities. The state’s Pavagada Solar Park, currently generating 2,050 MW annually, will be instrumental in expanding the state’s renewable energy capacity.
The project represents a major step in advancing Karnataka’s renewable energy goals and aligning with India’s broader climate objectives.
