The Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) is making rapid strides in its Smart Meters Project, a nationwide initiative that’s poised to transform the country’s utility landscape through digital innovation and sustainability.

As of mid-2025, more than 528,000 smart electricity meters and 460,000 smart water meters have been installed across Qatar, according to data released on Kahramaa’s official social media channels. The deployment is part of a broader strategy to replace all conventional utility meters with advanced digital systems in every Qatari household and commercial establishment.

The ambitious project, one of the largest digital infrastructure upgrades in the region, comprises over a dozen sub-projects, aimed at completing smart electricity meter installations by the end of 2025, and smart water meters by the close of 2027.

“These meters are not just devices, they’re the foundation of a more efficient, transparent, and sustainable public utility system,” Kahramaa said in a statement.

Equipped with cutting-edge features, the smart meters allow real-time consumption tracking, prepaid payment options, early fault detection, and quicker property transfers, enhancing the convenience and awareness for consumers while drastically improving operational efficiency.

Supporting the system is a centralised digital platform that collects and manages utility data, enabling remote monitoring, automated billing, and significantly reducing the carbon footprint from manual meter reading. Customers can also access their usage patterns through a dedicated mobile app, encouraging more responsible consumption of electricity and water.

Beyond consumer benefits, the project is a strategic enabler for national sustainability goals, aligning with Qatar National Vision 2030. The smart infrastructure allows Kahramaa to analyze usage patterns, forecast demand, detect anomalies such as leakage or overuse, and integrate renewable energy sources more seamlessly into the grid.

“This isn’t just about going digital, it’s about making our entire utility network smarter, more resilient, and ready for the demands of tomorrow,” a Kahramaa official noted.

By automating key functions like consumption monitoring, diagnostics, and billing, the system also frees up Kahramaa’s human resources to focus on strategic technical work and future upgrades, further minimising errors and enhancing reliability.

With full-scale rollout expected over the next two years, Kahramaa is calling on all residents and businesses to actively participate in the transition. The utility provider emphasised that public awareness and user engagement are essential for maximising the benefits of this digital shift.

From cutting carbon emissions to enhancing service delivery, Kahramaa’s Smart Meters Project stands as a landmark in Qatar’s ongoing journey toward sustainable infrastructure and smarter public services, setting a benchmark for digital transformation in the Gulf and beyond.
