Juniper Green Energy Ltd. has commissioned 60 MWh of its 100 MWh merchant Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project at Bikaner, Rajasthan, marking India’s first operational merchant energy storage facility.
The project, developed through its subsidiary Juniper Green Cosmic Pvt. Ltd., has completed trial operations and received approval from the Northern Regional Load Despatch Centre (NRLDC). Commercial operations commenced on December 24, 2025.
The remaining 40 MWh capacity is expected to be commissioned shortly. Once fully operational, the 100 MWh BESS will rank among the largest operating battery storage systems in India, enabling merchant revenue opportunities such as peak power arbitrage, grid balancing, and participation in ancillary service markets.
Separately, Juniper Green Energy has already installed an additional 400 MWh of BESS capacity at Fatehgarh in Rajasthan, which is targeted for commissioning by Q1 2026. This will significantly expand the company’s energy storage footprint and strengthen long-term growth visibility.
Battery Energy Storage Systems play a critical role in India’s energy transition by enhancing grid stability, enabling higher renewable energy penetration, managing peak demand, and improving transmission asset utilisation. As part of its broader strategy, Juniper plans to deploy BESS across its solar projects connected to the interstate transmission system (ISTS), creating an integrated renewable-plus-storage platform.
Commenting on the development, Ankush Malik, CEO of Juniper Green Energy, said that the commissioning of the company’s first merchant BESS highlights its execution capabilities and strategic focus on energy storage as a value-accretive asset class supporting grid reliability and portfolio diversification.
Juniper Green Energy continues to expand its renewable and storage portfolio, supported by a robust development pipeline and strong execution capabilities.
