Juniper Green Energy Commissions Additional 100 MWh BESS Capacity in Rajasthan

Juniper Green Energy Ltd., through its wholly owned subsidiary Juniper Green Cosmic Pvt. Ltd., has commissioned an additional 100 MWh of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) capacity at its Bikaner-II project in Rajasthan.

With the commissioning, the aggregate commissioned BESS capacity at the project has increased from 101 MWh to 201 MWh. The company’s stock-exchange filing had reported the commissioned capacity as 100.64 MWh, taking Juniper Green Cosmic’s aggregate commissioned BESS capacity from 100.64 MWh to 201.28 MWh.

The additional BESS capacity has been commissioned using the project’s existing grid connectivity. According to the company, recent regulatory clarity from the Central Transmission Utility of India Limited (CTUIL) allows storage capacity to be added without increasing the quantum of grid connectivity.

Juniper Green Energy said that this enables the company to utilise existing transmission infrastructure and add incremental storage capacity in a capital-efficient manner.

The newly commissioned capacity will initially operate on a merchant basis, allowing the company to participate in India’s energy storage market and derive revenue from requirements related to flexibility and grid balancing.

The company said that the commissioning is part of its strategy to expand its portfolio of renewable energy and energy storage assets while complementing its long-term contracted portfolio with merchant revenue opportunities.

Juniper Green Energy Whole-time Director and CEO Ankush Malik said that commissioning additional BESS capacity within the existing grid connectivity at Bikaner-II would help maximise the value of existing infrastructure. He said that the project’s storage capacity has now reached 201 MWh, providing additional merchant capacity without requiring incremental grid connectivity.

According to the company, Juniper Green Energy has an operational capacity of approximately 2.7 GWp and 603 MWh of BESS. Its total portfolio exceeds 11 GWp and 8.9 GWh of BESS, including operational, under-construction, contracted and awarded projects.

The company develops and operates utility-scale solar, wind, hybrid and Firm & Dispatchable Renewable Energy projects in India. It has been developing renewable energy assets since October 2018, with capabilities spanning project conceptualisation, development, construction and operations.
