JSW Neo Energy Signs INR 19,950 Cr MoU with Maha Govt for 5,200 MW Western Ghats PSP

JSW Neo Energy has signed an INR 19,950 crore MoU with Maharashtra’s Water Resources Department to develop the 5,200 MW Western Ghats pumped storage hydropower project. Maharashtra has signed two additional MoUs for 400 MW and 200 MW PSPs with MAHAGENCO Renewable Energy and New Asian Infrastructure Development.

JSW Neo Energy, a subsidiary of JSW Energy, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) worth INR 19,950 crore with Water Resources Department, Government of Maharashtra for 5,200 MW Western Ghats Pumped Storage Hydroelectric Project in Pune and Raigad.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis presided over the MoU signing and exchange and stated that this will be the largest pumped storage hydroelectric project in the country.

Alongside JSW, the Minister also formalised agreements with MAHAGENCO Renewable Energy for the 400 MW Koyna Stage-6 project with an investment commitment of INR 2,800 crore and New Asian Infrastructure Development for the 200 MW Sarovar project in Ahilyanagar with an investment commitment of INR 1,050 crore.

“These new projects will enhance Maharashtra's power generation capacity by an additional 5800 MW. These developments will bring a substantial investment of INR 23,800 crore and generate 11,500 new employment opportunities for the people,” CM Fadnavis stated in a post on X.

With this signing, a total of 54 MoUs for pump storage hydroelectric projects have been signed in the state. “These combined projects are set to generate 76,115 MW of power, attracting an investment of INR 4.06 lakh crore and creating 1.25 lakh employment opportunities. This represents a massive leap toward economic prosperity and energy security for Maharashtra,” he added.

The Chief Minister highlighted that pumped storage will be pivotal in stabilising Maharashtra’s renewable energy transition by addressing intermittency and ensuring reliable grid support. The state, already leading the country in pump storage potential, is now accelerating execution with strong backing from the Union Government, he stated.
