JSW Energy Ltd. has announced the successful commissioning of the first 80 MW Unit of its 240 MW (3 x 80 MW) Kutehr Hydroelectric Power Plant.

The Plant is situated in Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh and power dispatch to Haryana has commenced. “Second 80 MW unit has already been synchronised with the grid and is undergoing trial run, while the last unit is expected to be synchronised soon,” the company said in a statement.

The Kutehr project is backed by a long-term power purchase agreement with Haryana Power Purchase Centre (HPPC) for the entire 240 MW at a levelized ceiling tariff of INR 4.50/kWh, valid for 35 years with provisions for extension. Power generated will supply Haryana’s state distribution utilities — Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam and Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam.

Commenting on the development, Sharad Mahendra, Joint Managing Director and CEO of JSW Energy said, “We are proud to inform the commissioning of the Kutehr Hydroelectric Power Plant, one of the fastest built greenfield hydro project to be completed in India. This achievement underscores our strong project execution capabilities and our commitment to delivering clean, sustainable power to the nation. The timing is especially opportune, coinciding with the peak monsoon season, enabling us to capitalise on high water flow and reap the generation benefit in current fiscal. This clean hydro power will support Haryana’s energy needs while helping the state meet its Hydro Power Purchase Obligations.”

With this capacity addition, the installed hydro capacity stands at 1,471 MW, solar at 2,157 MW, Wind at 3,562 MW, taking the share of renewables to 56 percent.

JSW Energy has a total locked-in generation capacity of 30.3 GW comprising of 12.8 GW operational, 12.9 GW under-construction across thermal and renewable and has pipeline of 4.6 GW. The company also has 29.4 GWh of locked-in energy storage capacity through hydro pumped storage projects of 26.4 GWh and battery energy storage system of 3 GWh. The Company aims to reach 30 GW generation capacity and 40 GWh of energy storage capacity by FY 2030 and achieve Carbon Neutrality by 2050.
