Joint Solar Highlights Quality and Reliability as India Targets 500 GW Non-Fossil Power Capacity

Joint Solar highlights the need for quality, technology and long-term performance as India expands solar capacity and advances towards its 500 GW non fossil fuel target by 2030.

India’s solar sector is entering a phase where the focus is shifting beyond rapid capacity additions towards the quality, reliability and long term performance of projects, according to Joint Solar.

The company said that these factors will become increasingly important as India works towards its target of 500 GW of installed non fossil fuel based electricity generation capacity by 2030 and solar assumes a larger role in the country’s power mix.

India has expanded solar capacity rapidly, with utility scale projects growing alongside rooftop and distributed installations. The expansion has increased demand for solar modules and related equipment while placing greater emphasis on manufacturing standards, installation quality and the ability of systems to maintain consistent generation over their operating life.

Vinod Sharma, Director, Joint Solar, said that the scale of India’s solar expansion has changed the priorities of the industry, with quality and reliability becoming as important as capacity addition.

“The conversation is no longer only about adding capacity. Quality, reliability and the ability of systems to perform consistently over the long term will become equally important as solar takes a larger role in the country’s power mix,” Sharma said.

Joint Solar said that domestic manufacturing would also play a key role in strengthening India’s solar supply chain. Increased availability of locally manufactured modules and components could provide developers with more sourcing options while supporting the development of the wider solar manufacturing ecosystem.

Long term project performance is also gaining importance among developers and consumers. Factors including module quality, degradation, resistance to weather conditions and maintenance can influence the output and operational reliability of solar installations over their expected operating life.

The company said that technological improvements could further support the next phase of solar deployment. Higher module efficiency, advances in manufacturing processes and improved monitoring systems can help projects generate more electricity from available land and maintain performance under varying operating conditions.

At the grid level, the increasing contribution of solar is creating additional requirements for power system management. Since solar generation varies with sunlight availability, the integration of larger renewable capacities will require stronger transmission infrastructure, improved forecasting, energy storage and grid management systems.

Sharma said that India had demonstrated its ability to deploy solar capacity at scale, but the next challenge would be ensuring that the installed capacity delivers dependable output while operating efficiently within the wider electricity system.

“This will require coordination across manufacturing, project development, technology and grid infrastructure,” he said.

The expansion is also creating opportunities across the solar value chain, with greater attention being given to system design, performance monitoring, maintenance and long term support alongside equipment supply.

India’s 500 GW non fossil fuel capacity target is a major milestone in its energy transition. Solar is expected to contribute significantly to the target, while transmission, storage, manufacturing and power system management will remain important to support the growing renewable energy base.

Joint Solar said that the effectiveness of India’s solar expansion would ultimately depend not only on the number of gigawatts added but also on the quality, reliability and consistency of the power generated by the installed capacity.
