Jamshedpur has rolled out the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijili Yojana, an initiative providing free solar electricity to rural households. As part of the program, ten villages in the region will compete for the title of 'model solar village', encouraging communities to adopt best practices in renewable energy usage.

The scheme aims to reduce reliance on conventional power sources and kerosene, lower energy costs, and improve access to reliable electricity. Households will receive rooftop solar systems, supporting lighting, education, and small-scale economic activities in rural areas.

Local authorities noted that villages achieving model status will receive additional technical support, infrastructure funding, and guidance on promoting sustainable energy practices. Residents have welcomed the initiative, seeing it as a transformative step toward affordable electricity and environmental conservation.

The programme aligns with India’s broader renewable energy goals, promoting decentralised solar power and easing pressure on conventional grids. Authorities will monitor village progress through energy consumption, maintenance of solar installations, and community engagement, ultimately recognizing the most successful village as a benchmark for others.

Experts say initiatives like this not only meet rural energy needs but also raise awareness about climate change and the benefits of sustainable energy solutions, potentially serving as a model for other regions.
