The Union Minister for Power and New & Renewable Energy, R.K. Singh, revealed a significant improvement in the power situation in Jammu & Kashmir, highlighting the reduction of the energy deficit from 17.8 percent in 2018-19 to an impressive 1.5 percent up to November 2023 during 2023-24.
The minister provided insights into the progress made in launching four hydroelectric projects since 2019, namely Kiru (624 MW), Ratle (850 MW), Kwar (540 MW), and Karnah (12 MW), collectively contributing to a capacity of 2,026 MW.
Jammu & Kashmir State Power Development Corporation Limited (JKSPDC) has been instrumental in generating a total of 48,808.68 Million Units of Energy from 13 Hydro Power Projects since 2014-15. The minister presented a year-wise breakdown of energy generation, showcasing a consistent upward trend.
As of November 2023, the UT of J&K has been allocated 2791 MW of power from Central Generating Stations, with additional allocations made by the Ministry of Power to meet increased demand during the winter months.
The minister emphasized the joint initiative between the Government of India and UT of Jammu and Kashmir to develop hydropower, achieving an energy surplus UT. Key projects, including Uri (Stage-11), Dulhasti (Stage-II), Sawalkote HEP, and Rattle HEP, are underway, contributing to the overall development.
Chenab Valley Power Projects [P] Ltd. (CVPPPL) is actively involved in constructing projects with a combined capacity of 3094 MW, expected to be completed by 2026. Furthermore, JKSPDC has identified 14 projects with an aggregate capacity of 738.5 MW for execution, aiming for a total hydro power capacity addition of 7000 MW in the next 8 to 10 years.
