Jaguar Overseas Limited (JOL) has announced its involvement in the 36-month Bihar Rural Electrification project. The project, commissioned by the North Bihar Power Distribution Co.Ltd, a public sector undertaking under the Government of Bihar, encompasses the re-conductoring and re-strengthening of existing HT (High Tension) and LT (Low Tension) lines with allied works under the State Plan Scheme in the Samastipur and Begusarai districts of Bihar.
The project seeks to turn around the state of affairs in Bihar, which has one of the largest numbers of non-electrified villages in the country. Jaguar Overseas will be responsible for multiple facets of the project, which include the conversion of existing feeders and upgradation of feeders, adoption of better equipment, a thorough check of material and compliance with statutory clearances.
The project valued at Rs.170 crores marks the intensive investment that Jaguar Overseas has undertaken to deliver the best in quality and ensure sustainability of this electrification project.
Rural electrification is a matter of national importance, and the Modi government has taken steps to achieve its target through the ‘Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Grameen Jyoti Yojana’. The country has made significant strides in electrification since 2000. Electricity supply reached 82 per cent of the population in 2016, a significant rise from the 43 per cent that was reported at the turn of the century, according to the International Energy Agency.
Deepak Mathur, Chief Executive Officer, Jaguar Overseas Limited, said, “As a global EPC player with many years of experience, the electrification of the Samastipur and Begusarai districts of Bihar serves as a model to be replicated across the country. The successful completion will not only help in the growth and progress of the state but will also provide an impetus for business opportunities in the area. If the electricity provided to villages is not regular and affordable, then electrification will not serve its purpose. Our vision of success is sustainable, high-quality measurable outcomes, which benefit the people, and we are hopeful that we will be able to contribute to the Prime Minister’s vision of complete electrification through this project.”
The rural electrification project will have a manifold effect on the state. In impoverished and underdeveloped areas, even small amounts of electricity will help save time and labour. Through the provision of electricity, the project hopes to facilitate business, improve access to healthcare, reduce the use of kerosene and oil lamps and promote commercial activities.
North Bihar Power Distribution Co. Ltd is responsible for laying and maintaining power infrastructure for distribution of electricity in 21 districts of Bihar and its partnership with Jaguar Overseas highlights the need for various state governments to bring in the expertise of private players and companies to improve and build upon existing public infrastructure.
Dhanjay Kumar, Executive Engineer, NBPDCL, said, “Our association with Jaguar Overseas reflects our commitment to electrifying the districts of Samastipur and Begusarai as a first step to declaring Bihar, a fully electrified state. We are working with and encouraging credible private player participation. We believe that the value that a public-private partnership brings to the table is unparalleled. With India increasingly becoming a global power, rural electrification will help maintain elevate the standard of living and is a step in the right direction. Through Jaguar Overseas’ experience in this sector, our partnership aims at economic growth, security and prosperity for the people in the state of Bihar”.
