Iraq's Minister of Electricity, Ziyad Ali Fadel, held a virtual meeting with representatives from the UAE's Masdar recently, aiming to fast-track the development of solar power projects that will generate 1,000 MW of electricity across Maysan, Dhi Qar, and Anbar provinces.
The main objective of the meeting was to finalise the power purchase agreements (PPA) and resolve various challenges related to project implementation. The discussions were aimed at ensuring that the planned solar initiatives move forward without delays.
The move comes at a time when Iraq is making significant strides in its renewable energy ambitions. In March 2025, construction began on the largest solar power plant in the country, the 1,000 MW Basra Sun. This plant is being developed through a joint venture between France’s TotalEnergies and Qatar’s QatarEnergy.
Iraq is targeting a renewable energy share of 20-25 percent in its electricity mix by 2030. This shift aligns with broader regional and global trends towards cleaner energy sources. With these new solar projects, Iraq aims to diversify its energy mix and reduce its reliance on fossil fuels, creating a more sustainable and resilient energy sector for the future.
