INOX Air Products (INOXAP) has flagged off India’s first LNG-fuelled cryogenic tanker, marking a landmark development in sustainable logistics for the industrial gas sector.
The tanker has received approval from the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO), operating under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce.
The deployment follows a key policy amendment issued by DPIIT in June 2025 to the Static and Mobile Pressure Vessels (Unfired) Rules, 2016, which formally permits the use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a transport fuel for cryogenic tankers. INOXAP is the first industrial gas manufacturer in India to operationalise this provision.
The tanker was flagged off by P Seeniraj, Joint Chief Controller of Explosives, PESO Vadodara Circle. It is powered by a 450-litre Kryopower LNG fuel tank manufactured by INOX India Ltd, India’s cryogenic equipment manufacturer. The LNG-powered vehicle is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to 25 percent and particulate emissions by nearly 95 percent, while also offering quieter operations and improved fuel efficiency.
According to the company, the shift to LNG provides a cleaner pathway for long-term operational cost optimisation and aligns with the government’s broader objective of promoting LNG as an alternative transport fuel across sectors.
Commenting on the milestone, Siddharth Jain, Director, INOX Group, said that the deployment represents a convergence of progressive policy support, indigenous engineering, and sustainable innovation, setting a new benchmark for logistics in India’s industrial gas ecosystem.
The initiative also highlights a strong localisation focus. Both the cryogenic tanker and LNG fuel tank have been designed and manufactured at INOXCVA facilities in Gujarat. The industrial gases transported by the LNG-fuelled tanker will be produced by INOXAP within the state and supplied primarily to customers across Gujarat, strengthening a localised and resilient supply chain.
The company noted that the milestone was supported by proactive engagement from Gujarat State government departments, reflecting the State’s emphasis on industrial innovation and sustainability.
