India’s Solar Power Generation Surges 138 Percent in Four Years, Crosses 174.7 Billion Units in FY26

India’s solar power generation has increased by nearly 138 percent over the past four years, reaching 174.76 billion units in the financial year 2025-26 from 73.48 billion units in 2021-22, according to data shared by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) in Parliament.

Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy and Power Shripad Yesso Naik, in a written reply, said that solar energy's share in the country's total electricity generation rose from 4.95 percent in FY22 to 9.50 percent in FY26, underlining the rapid expansion of India's renewable energy sector.

The growth has continued in the current financial year. Data from the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) shows that India generated 62.79 billion units of solar power during April to June of FY27. Solar accounted for 12.03 percent of the country's total electricity generation of 521.82 billion units during the period.

Overall renewable energy generation reached 137.81 billion units during the first quarter of FY27, contributing 26.41 percent of total electricity generation. As of June 2026, renewable energy sources accounted for 52.6 percent of India's installed electricity generation capacity, while contributing around 26 percent to the country's total electricity generation.

Explaining the difference between installed renewable capacity and its share in actual electricity generation, Naik said solar and wind power have lower capacity utilisation factors than conventional thermal power plants because they are intermittent and dependent on weather conditions.

India's total electricity generation from all sources increased from 1,484.36 billion units in FY22 to 1,840.11 billion units in FY26. During the same period, renewable energy generation, including solar, wind, biomass, bagasse, small hydro, large hydro and other renewable sources, rose from 322.53 billion units, accounting for 21.73 percent of total generation, to 477.78 billion units, representing 25.96 percent.

Solar generation has recorded steady year on year growth, increasing from 102.01 billion units in FY23 to 115.97 billion units in FY24, 144.15 billion units in FY25 and 174.76 billion units in FY26, reflecting the continued expansion of India's solar power capacity and rising contribution to the national electricity mix.
