India’s green economy is on the brink of a major employment boom, with nearly 7.29 million green jobs expected to be created by FY28, according to a latest report by global digital talent solutions firm NLB Services.

The growth is being driven by aggressive investments in green technologies and a broader shift towards sustainability across key sectors. As per report, industries such as renewable energy, electric vehicles, waste management, sustainable textiles, and green construction are leading the charge in job creation. This trend is aligned with India Inc.’s growing focus on scaling green transformation as a strategic priority.

Looking further ahead, the green sector is projected to generate around 35 million jobs by 2047, reflecting the long-term potential of sustainable industries to reshape India's employment landscape.

Sachin Alug, CEO of NLB Services, observed that over the past four to five years, green jobs have transitioned from being niche roles to becoming mainstream opportunities across sectors such as renewable energy, electric vehicles, and sustainable infrastructure. He noted that the key shift has been in the required skillsets, with today’s green workforce needing a combination of sustainability knowledge and digital proficiency. According to him, the growing integration of technologies like AI, IoT, blockchain, GIS, and data-driven tools is helping to shape a foundation for progressive, future-ready green careers.

According to the report, organisations are also revamping their workforce strategies. There is now a clear pivot toward skill-based hiring, with practical green competencies being prioritised over traditional qualifications. This has opened up diverse pathways for aspiring professionals to enter the sector through vocational training and upskilling programs.

While metros like Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Delhi remain hotspots for green job opportunities, tier II and III cities are fast catching up. Cities such as Jaipur, Indore, Visakhapatnam, Ahmedabad, Coimbatore, Bhubaneswar, and Chandigarh are projected to account for 35–40 percent of the 7.29 million new green jobs by FY28. This growth is being supported by activity in sectors like logistics, warehousing, and sustainable agriculture.

However, gender disparity remains a concern. Currently, women hold only 11–12 percent of green jobs in India, a gap attributed to unequal access to technical education, cultural barriers, and workplace safety concerns.

Alug noted that forward-looking companies are taking steps to address this imbalance. Many are adopting inclusive hiring practices and partnering with training organisations to invest in women-focused skill development. These initiatives are expected to improve gender parity by 12–15 percent over the next 5–6 years.

As India charts its course toward a greener and more sustainable future, the expanding green job market is poised to play a central role in driving both economic growth and environmental progress.
