Indian Army Establishes Solar Power Plant in North Sikkim Border Village

The Indian Army’s Trishakti Corps has commissioned a 10 kW solar power plant at Muguthang village in North Sikkim, bringing sustainable electricity and year-round liveability to a remote high-altitude border community.

The Indian Army, under the aegis of Trishakti Corps, has established a 10 kW solar power plant at Muguthang village, located at an altitude of approximately 15,000 feet near the India–China border in North Sikkim.

The initiative aligns with the objectives of the Government of India’s Vibrant Villages Programme and aims to improve the quality of life in remote border areas, an official statement noted.

The solar power plant has provided reliable electricity to all households in the village, enabling year-round habitation, improving night-time safety, enhancing connectivity and eliminating the need for seasonal migration during harsh winter months, it said.

Muguthang is a sparsely populated border village with 32 residents from ten families, living in a remote and weather-challenged environment. Earlier, due to the absence of a dependable power supply, villagers relied on small personal solar panels and were compelled to migrate for nearly five to six months each year, leaving behind homes and livestock, it said.

Recognising this hardship, Trishakti Corps of the Indian Army engaged closely with the local community and implemented a sustainable energy solution to ensure basic electrification. The project has significantly improved living conditions and overall community well-being, the statement added.

Speaking on the occasion, an Indian Army officer said, “Providing essential facilities in remote border areas is vital for national resilience. This solar power project will help the people of Muguthang live safely and with dignity throughout the year.”

The initiative reflects the Indian Army’s continued commitment, under Trishakti Corps, to inclusive development, strengthening civil–military bonds, and supporting resilient border communities, it said.
