BEE and CPWD inks MoU to Encourage Energy Efficiency in Buildings

In the initial stage, around 150 buildings will be taken under star rating program and to encourage energy efficiency in CPWD managed buildings. It is expected that this program will result in energy savings of more than 50 million units in the primary stage

The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) and the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) has announced that it has inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) initiating their cooperation to encourage energy efficiency in buildings. The MoU will stay in force for five years unless annulled by either party.

According to the MoU, BEE and CPWD will collaborate on encouraging designs and construction of Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC) obedient new buildings star rating of CPWD managed buildings across the country with no listing or renewal fee, consciousness on energy efficiency in building sector and support for competence building of CPWD officials in ECBC.

As per government release, “This association of BEE, a statutory body under the Ministry of Power which is mandated to implement policy and programs in energy efficiency and conservation with CPWD, a premier construction agency of the government would establish new benchmarks for energy efficient buildings in the country and will support India’s vision of achieving energy security, economic growth, and environmental sustainability.”
