India is on track to become a prominent battery manufacturing hub in the near future, according to Union Minister of Heavy Industries, Dr. Mahendra Nath Pandey, who made the announcement at the 'Green Plate EV Rally' held at Pragati Maidan.

This event, jointly organized by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) and the Ministry of Heavy Industries, showcased more than 100 electric vehicles, spanning 2-wheelers, 3-wheelers, cars, and buses, shedding light on the country's evolving automotive sector as it addresses the growing demand for electric vehicles among Indian consumers.

Dr. Pandey emphasised the government's unwavering support for the EV sector, highlighting the positive impact of schemes like the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) program in battery development.

With 9.4 lakh EVs currently operating on Indian roads and the discovery of lithium deposits in Jammu and Kashmir, India is making strides towards reducing its dependency and achieving self-reliance.

Kamran Rizvi, Secretary of the Ministry of Heavy Industries, acknowledged the Indian automobile industry's pivotal role in the nation's shift toward electric vehicles, bolstered by schemes such as FAME and PLI. With projections indicating the sale of 12 lakh scooters this year, it's evident that the Indian public is increasingly inclined towards EVs.

Vinod Aggarwal, President of SIAM, echoed the sentiment of India's ongoing transition to e-mobility, emphasizing the necessity for strengthened policy and infrastructure support. Dr. Hanif Qureshi, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Heavy Industries, stressed the importance of raising awareness about electric vehicles, acknowledging that while Europe, the US, and China currently lead in EV sales, India is poised to achieve comparable numbers.
