India Targets 60–80 GW C&I Renewable Push by 2030, Says MNRE Secretary

MNRE Secretary Santosh Kumar Sarangi says commercial and industrial developers will deliver 60–80 GW of renewable energy by 2030, with states ramping tenders, rooftop solar expanding, and storage emerging as a key priority.

India is preparing for a major renewable energy boost driven by commercial and industrial (C&I) developers, who are expected to add 60–80 GW of clean power by 2030. This was disclosed by MNRE Secretary Santosh Kumar Sarangi, speaking at CII’s India Edge event.

He said C&I installations are expanding rapidly and will soon become a key pillar of India’s clean energy growth. He added that rooftop solar is rising across several regions, with Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat showing strong momentum.

Sarangi highlighted that more states are now tailoring renewable tenders to their specific needs, creating a clear pattern of state-driven clean energy expansion. With electricity demand rising sharply, he emphasised that renewable growth will only accelerate from here.

Sarangi underscored that while renewable deployment is scaling up fast, grid integration challenges remain. Strengthening transmission systems with battery storage and expanding overall storage capacity will be essential, he said.

Calling energy security a priority, Sarangi urged companies to leverage the PLI scheme, noting that India’s solar module manufacturing capacity has already touched 140 GW.

He also pointed to rising global grey ammonia prices, now USD 450 to 550, driven partly by rupee depreciation, and said the government is encouraging ports to develop bunkering facilities using Green Hydrogen Mission funds, strengthening the emerging hydrogen ecosystem.

Sarangi stressed that MNRE is closely coordinating with the CTU, CEA, Ministry of Power and regulators, and continues regular monthly engagements with industry across solar, wind and other RE segments to ensure smooth sectoral growth.
