India Surges Past US, Germany to Lead Global Wind Market Outside China in 2025

India has installed record 6.3 GW wind capacity in 2025, up 85 percent, overtaking US and Germany. Growth driven by hybrid auctions, delayed projects, and rising domestic manufacturing strength.

India emerged as the largest wind power market outside mainland China in 2025 after commissioning a record 6.3 GW of wind capacity, marking an 85 percent increase from the previous year, according to BloombergNEF.

The surge enabled India to overtake both the United States and Germany, with the US losing its long-held position as the second-largest wind market globally.

The sharp rise in installations was largely driven by the expansion of multi-technology renewable auctions, which require developers to combine wind, solar, and energy storage projects. These hybrid tenders are typically oversized to ensure more stable and reliable clean power supply. Additionally, a backlog of projects initially scheduled for commissioning in 2024 but delayed due to grid connectivity issues contributed to the strong growth in 2025.

India’s record capacity additions also boosted domestic manufacturing. Adani Wind entered the global turbine manufacturer rankings after deploying over 1 GW of turbines through Adani Green Energy at its large-scale renewable park in Khavda.

At the same time, Western turbine manufacturers lost market share in India to Asian competitors. Domestic companies such as Suzlon Energy and Inox Wind, along with Chinese players like Envision Energy and Sany Renewable Energy, gained ground. European and US manufacturers installed around 1.3 GW of capacity during the year, compared to approximately 2.5 GW by Chinese firms, while domestic suppliers accounted for an even larger share.

Looking ahead, annual wind installations in India are expected to remain broadly stable through the decade. Additions may dip slightly to just above 5 GW in the near term before picking up again from 2027, supported by improvements in transmission infrastructure. Overall, India is projected to add about 30 GW of new wind capacity by 2030.
