India and Singapore are exploring a proposed 2,000 MW cross-border power interconnection that could connect Imphal in India to Singapore through Myanmar, Thailand and Malaysia via a transmission corridor spanning around 3,000 km.

Minister of State for Power and New and Renewable Energy Shripad Yesso Naik announced the proposal while addressing the East Asia Summit energy ministers’ meeting in Manila.

The proposed interconnection is expected to facilitate cross-border electricity trade, support renewable energy integration and strengthen regional energy security. The project remains under exploration, with further work needed to assess the available interconnection options.

India has also offered to share its expertise in renewable energy deployment, grid integration, transmission planning, energy storage, green hydrogen and clean energy technologies with East Asian countries.

As part of broader regional energy cooperation, India has called for stronger institutional links between the ASEAN Centre for Energy and Indian organisations, including NTPC, Power Grid Corporation of India and the Central Electricity Authority.

Potential areas of collaboration include strategic petroleum reserves, electricity system resilience, liquefied natural gas and gas supply security, renewable energy forecasting, battery energy storage and green hydrogen.

The proposed power corridor could expand regional electricity connectivity and create opportunities for cooperation in clean energy technologies. Further discussions will be needed to assess the feasibility and development of the proposed interconnection.
