India has met a record maximum power demand of 250 GW on May 30, 2024. This milestone reflects a combination of weather-related loads and increased industrial and residential power consumption across the nation.
On May 29, India's non-solar demand met an all-time high of 234.3 GW, further highlighting the growing energy requirements. The Northern region also set a new record on May 30, achieving a peak demand met of 86.7 GW. Similarly, the Western region reached its highest-ever demand met, hitting 74.8 GW.
India's thermal power generation reached an unprecedented peak of 176 GW (ex-bus) during non-solar hours. This performance is attributed to the strategic implementation of Section-11, which maximized generation from imported coal-based plants and gas-based plants. The efficiency and capacity of India's thermal power plants continue to play a key role in the nation's energy mix.
The support from renewable energy sources has been vital in meeting the demand, with solar power contributing during daylight hours and wind power during non-solar hours.
These achievements highlight the coordinated efforts of various stakeholders in the power sector, including government agencies, power generation companies, and grid operators.
