India continues to make significant strides in its solar energy journey, with the Union Minister for New & Renewable Energy and Power R.K. Singh revealing that the government has sanctioned a total of 50 Solar Parks across 12 states since 2014. This information, provided by Singh in a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha.
The parks boast an aggregate capacity of 37,490 MW, marking a substantial commitment to expanding the country's renewable energy portfolio. As of October 31, 2023, solar projects within these parks have already established an impressive 10,237 MW capacity.
The Solar Parks Scheme, a pivotal initiative, has seen the successful implementation of solar projects in various states. Notable examples include Andhra Pradesh's Ananthapuramu-I and Kadapa Solar Parks, Gujarat's Radhnesada and Dholera Solar Parks, and Karnataka's Pavagada Solar Park, among others. These projects contribute to the overall vision of scaling up renewable energy in India.
The government's multifaceted approach to bolstering renewable energy includes permitting 100 percent Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), waiving Inter State Transmission System (ISTS) charges for solar and wind power, and declaring trajectories for Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO) up to 2029-30.
The establishment of Ultra Mega Renewable Energy Parks, alongside schemes like Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan (PM-KUSUM), Solar Rooftop Phase II, and the 12000 MW CPSU Scheme Phase II, demonstrates a comprehensive strategy to encourage large-scale renewable projects.
Infrastructure development under the Green Energy Corridor Scheme, setting standards for solar photovoltaic system/devices, and the launch of the Green Term Ahead Market (GTAM) further contribute to the facilitation of renewable power generation.
