India is formulating a comprehensive plan to ensure traceability in the use of green hydrogen and to establish strong global export partnerships, stated Santosh Kumar Sarangi, Secretary, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) at the CII International Business Conclave on Green Hydrogen, held in New Delhi.
Sarangi emphasised the importance of tracking the utilisation of green hydrogen across sectors to certify its origin and use – especially in emissions-heavy industries like steel, where it's currently impossible to distinguish whether production involved grey or green hydrogen.
He noted that the government is actively engaging with green hydrogen producers to develop robust mechanisms for the identification, traceability, and tracking of hydrogen-derived products. These initiatives align with India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission, launched in January 2023 with an outlay of INR 19,744 crore. The Mission aims to position India as a global leader in green hydrogen production, consumption, and export and has set a target of 5 million tonnes of annual production by 2030.
Sarangi also highlighted that concessions related to green hydrogen exports will form part of India’s future trade negotiations. “We are in talks with key stakeholders in Europe, including the ports of Rotterdam and Antwerp, to ensure secure transmission infrastructure for green hydrogen exports,” he added.
