India Needs Over INR 30 Lakh Crore Investment to Reach 500 GW Non-Fossil Fuel Capacity by 2030

India will require more than INR 30 lakh crore in investment over the next five years to achieve its target of 500 GW of non fossil fuel capacity by 2030, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi said that at the Mumbai roadshow for the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit & Expo (BRESE) 2026.

Joshi said that the scale of investment required to meet the 2030 target would create significant opportunities for financial institutions, capital markets, insurance funds, infrastructure investors and private capital. He also urged stakeholders across the energy sector to participate in BRESE 2026 and use the platform to explore partnerships, new markets and investment opportunities.

India has crossed 300 GW of installed non fossil fuel capacity, reaching around 302 to 303 GW. According to Joshi, non fossil fuel capacity has increased from 80.3 GW to 300.5 GW over the past 12 years, representing a 275 percent increase.

Solar capacity has risen from 2.8 GW to 165 GW during the same period, marking nearly 58 fold growth. Wind capacity has increased from around 21 GW to 58 GW, a 176 percent rise.

India added more than 17 GW of renewable energy capacity during the first four months of FY 2026 to 27, including 14.33 GW of solar capacity and more than 2 GW of wind capacity.

Joshi said that Mumbai has an important role in India’s clean energy investment ecosystem because of its concentration of financial institutions and investors. He urged Maharashtra to use BRESE 2026 to showcase its renewable energy projects, particularly its experience under PM KUSUM, and explore international partnerships for solarisation models in agriculture.

Maharashtra Minister for Renewable Energy Atul Moreshwar Save said that the state will participate as a partner state at BRESE 2026. Maharashtra has set a target of achieving 65 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030.

Save also highlighted Maharashtra’s rooftop solar delivery network under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana and said that the state had achieved the highest number of solar pump installations.

MNRE Secretary Santosh Kumar Sarangi said that BRESE 2026 would provide a one stop platform for discussions on the challenges and opportunities facing the renewable energy sector. MNRE Joint Secretary JVN Subramanyam also outlined opportunities that the summit will offer to renewable energy stakeholders.

BRESE 2026 will bring together the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit and Expo, the ninth General Assembly of the International Solar Alliance and the fourth International Conference on Green Hydrogen. The four day event is expected to attract heads of government and energy ministers from more than 75 countries, global institutional investors, technology providers and more than 25,000 participants from across the renewable energy value chain.

Hosted by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy and the International Solar Alliance, with support from the Confederation of Indian Industry, BRESE 2026 will be held at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi from November 2 to 5, 2026.

The Mumbai roadshow was the second event in a nationwide series after the inaugural roadshow in Jaipur. Further roadshows are scheduled in Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Bengaluru and Kolkata.
